A Prelude to Mother’s Day – Care for Those Who Are Coping
The month of May represents spring and many new beginnings. Couples and women, in particular, struggling with fertility have a difficult time during the month of May – a month when they are reminded of “Mother’s Day.”
A prelude to Mother’s Day, The Reproductive Medicine Group will host the sixth annual New Beginnings Fertility Conference on May 10 in Tampa at the Mainsail Suites Hotel and Conference Center from 8:30am to 3:30 pm.The conference speakers are infertility field leaders, many of whom have published books or journal articles. These speakers include physicians, a licensed mental health counselor, a women’s health nurse, an acupuncture physician, a fertility yoga specialist, and a co-founder of RESOLVE’s Tampa chapter, all of whom strive to ensure that fertility has the best chance of success. The highlight of the conference will be fertility assessments and lifestyle considerations for women age 35 and above. Expect to receive support and answers regarding these and other topics, including Mother’s Day. In addition to lectures and group discussions, attendees can also look forward to a health and wellness fair, continental breakfast, lunch, and raffle drawings.
While this time of year can be difficult, it is important to remember that you are not alone. Consider joining an online group of women struggling with fertility, like The Reproductive Medicine Group’s PCOS discussion group on Facebook, and receive support from women in similar situations. Also, RESOLVE (The National Infertility Association) provides helpful insight from other women for coping with Mother’s Day. Having a “girls day” with female relatives and friends and pampering yourself with a manicure or massage can create bonds with the women in your life. An outing like a bike ride or beach day may shift the focus towards an activity and Mother Nature’s beauty. Or, perhaps your partner can prepare your favorite meal as part of a date night. Staying away from restaurants, where Mother’s Day tends to be a focus, may be beneficial.
Also, it is important to remember that women can be “mom-like” figures even if they have not given birth. For example, a nephew or niece, younger friend, or a young co-worker may need the support that you can provide – you may already be a mother in his/her eyes.
While May can be a difficult month, it is also a month of hope, support, and education.
