Kim’s Journey to Motherhood
When Kim and her husband tied the knot in 2010, they felt like they had their whole lives ahead of them. They had both just completed their medical educations, were passionate about their work, and excited about what the future held. As a couple, they knew one thing for sure—they wanted to have a family someday.
At 34, Kim didn’t think she was in any rush. After all, she felt like there was plenty of time to make her dreams of motherhood a reality. But as months passed, and they found themselves trying unsuccessfully to conceive, the reality of infertility began to settle in.
After six months of trying without success, Kim and her husband sought the help of a local fertility clinic. The couple’s journey to parenthood was about to take a path they hadn’t expected. Kim remembers that moment vividly—walking into the clinic with hope, but also with a sense of uncertainty. They tried intrauterine insemination (IUI) two times, both of which required the assistance of medications to help increase their chances of success. But both attempts ended in heartbreak.
Undeterred, they moved on to in vitro fertilization (IVF). The process was challenging and emotionally draining, but they were determined. They went through two rounds of IVF locally, both of which were unsuccessful. It was during this time that they were referred to a clinic in Colorado for a third attempt. Kim thought, This could be the one. This time it will work. Unfortunately, the news they received after that third attempt was not the one they were hoping for.
The diagnosis: unexplained infertility. Their doctor gently explained that Kim would likely not be able to use her own eggs or carry a child.
After months of grappling with the heartbreaking news, Kim and her husband decided to change course and explore adoption. In 2014, they moved to Florida, where they were matched with a young woman who had made the brave decision to place her unborn child for adoption. It felt like everything was finally falling into place. They were ecstatic, hopeful, and ready to start their family.
Two weeks before the delivery, everything changed. The birth mother made the decision to keep her child. Kim and her husband were devastated, overwhelmed by a deep sense of loss. It was as though the dream of parenthood had slipped away once again.
Kim remembers the moment clearly when she turned to her husband and said, "I don't think I'm meant to be a mother. I don’t want to try anymore." The emotional toll of the past few years had taken its toll, and she was mentally and emotionally spent.
But life has a funny way of surprising us when we least expect it. Two years later, Kim’s husband approached her with an idea that reignited the hope she thought she had lost. He suggested they pursue donor eggs and surrogacy—something they had discussed casually in the past but never seriously considered. It took Kim a while to process, but deep down, she realized that the desire to be a mother was still in her heart. It wasn’t over. Not yet.
They had heard about Dr. Yeko and The Reproductive Medicine Group (RMG) through a close friend who had been a patient there. The friend spoke so highly of him and the practice that Kim and her husband decided to schedule a consultation. From the moment they met Dr. Yeko, they knew they had found someone who truly understood their journey. He was compassionate, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, confident that with donor eggs and surrogacy, they could achieve their dreams of parenthood.
With renewed hope and determination, Kim and her husband began the process. The road wasn’t easy, and there were still moments of uncertainty, but they remained focused on their goal. And then, in 2020, their dream came true. They welcomed their beautiful baby into the world, and the joy of holding their child for the first time was beyond words.
But their family wasn’t complete just yet. The couple felt they had so much love to give, so they decided to expand their family further. In 2022, they welcomed their second child, and in 2024, their third. Their hearts, once filled with uncertainty and grief, were now overflowing with the love of three children—proof that even the most difficult journeys can lead to the most beautiful destinations.
One of the most challenging aspects of Kim’s journey was realizing that she wouldn’t have the traditional path to motherhood she had once envisioned. She had always dreamed of the moment when she’d find out she was pregnant, surprise her husband with the news, and experience the joy of carrying her own child. But that was not her reality. At first, it was difficult to accept the journey she’d long imagined was not the one she’d ultimately experience.
But as their children arrived, Kim realized that none of that mattered anymore. All the pain, the heartache, the endless challenges—was worth it. She now knows in her heart that each one of her children was exactly the child she was meant to have. And as difficult as the journey was, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
"I would choose this path every time."
Kim said, at RMG, they felt truly seen and heard. From the start, Courtney and the third-party team worked seamlessly with their agencies to coordinate with their anonymous egg donor and with their surrogate’s agency. Kim and her husband never felt sidelined in the process; they were kept involved and updated every step of the way. The team at RMG made them feel like the captains of their own ship, guiding them with care and expertise but ensuring they were always part of the decision-making process.
Kim’s story is one of perseverance, hope, and resilience. It’s a reminder that the road to parenthood may not always look the way we envision it, but with love, support, and determination, dreams can still come true. Today, they are a family—stronger, happier, and more grateful than they could have ever imagined.
“Be kind to yourself. One failure, or several, do not mean you will ultimately be unsuccessful. It takes time and a lot of persistence, in most cases, to create your heart's desire.”
